BIG BEND JOURNEY: DENNIS BLAGG, CINDI HOLT, JIM MALONE
"The desert represents a landscape of broken promise, yet it is a place of vast spiritual content... an emptiness waiting to be filled... the Big Bend offers many faces to be painted." Dennis Blagg
Artspace 111 is pleased to announce a new show featuring the work of artists Dennis Blagg, Cindi Holt, Jim Malone, and, in the Salon, Betty Alcorn. The exhibit, Big Bend Journey, features four artists’ take on picturesque landscapes of the Big Bend Region of Texas in their unique styles.
Dennis Blagg's vivid Big Bend National Park paintings capture the essence of nature in a duality of the literal and mythical - an exploration that goes beyond reality. Blagg has had great success with his paintings of these grand monolith landscapes. His resume is filled with over thirty public and private collections including: Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, and Fort Worth Modern Art Museum. After completing a massive 42-foot painting for the Dallas/Fort Worth International Terminal D in 2005, Blagg had taken a more intimate approach to his breathtaking, near-photographic portraits of the remote mountain desert of Big Bend.
California native and self- taught artist Cindi Holt has been painting in Fort Worth for over 25 years. Her warped subject matter is painted with oil on canvas and creates inviting images using bold, saturated colors. A favorite of George and Laura Bush during their gubernatorial and presidential years, Holt created many works of art for the couple and for official Governor’s Mansion and White House events.
Originally from Ne w York, Jim Malone moved to Texas to pursue his Graduate studies in
Art and decided to stay a while. He is now known for his experience working with a variety of media and known for his captivating drawings on paper of Big Bend. For Malone to create his distinctive images he uses a combination of media that is not traditionally utilized in unison. Malone brings to play graphite, watercolor, pen and charcoal, collage, opaque acrylic paint, wax and thread, and even burns lines into paper using a magnifying glass. Whether the subject is as monumentous as a mountain or a quaint cactus, Malone is always attentive to the smallest details.
The show will be on exhibit beginning Fall Gallery Night September 10, 2011 and run through October 24, 2011. Enjoy beer and wine by Ben E Keith, water by Aqua Panna / San Pellegrino, music by Black Tie Bluegrass, and food by Yes! TACO. Fall Gallery Night is free and open to the public.
