Paper: JANET CHAFFEE, JIM MALONE, AND KATE RIVERS
Artspace 111 announces the show Paper, featuring works on paper by Janet Chaffee, Jim Malone, and Kate Rivers. The exhibition opens Friday, February 7, 2014 from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. and will run through March 22, 2014. Enjoy beer and wine by Ben E Keith. Artspace 111 is free and open to the public.

The source of inspiration for Janet Chaffee is lace, which has long been a part of communities, ceremonies, rituals, and customs of everyday life binding individuals and community together while creating a continuity of public and personal histories. Lace provides both gender associations and contradictions in addition to providing a visual dialog suggesting both handmade and machine made work. Chaffee creates large-scale drawings and cutwork based on antique lace. Chaffee received her BFA in painting and drawing from University of Texas at Arlington in 1999 and her MFA in painting from Texas Christian University in 2002. Since graduating, she has taught drawing at TCU, UTA, The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and has been in several individual as well as group shows throughout the state of Texas.

Known for his works on paper and his landscapes of the Big Bend region, Jim Malone is a consummate draftsman who has worked in a variety of media and techniques over a career spanning 35 years. To create his images he uses graphite, watercolor, pen and charcoal, collage, opaque acrylic paint, wax, and thread, and even burns lines into paper using a magnifying glass. He also works with composite images of photographs. Celestial and terrestrial maps figure in many of his compositions. Malone has participated in group shows and solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, and at other museums and galleries throughout Texas.
Kate Rivers’s collage works explore memory, loss, nostalgia, time and space. The torn strips of maps, notes, cancelled stamps, old books, and scraps of paper with handwritten notes or maps and other found paper materials create abstracted forms that are reduced to patterns and shapes. Rivers turns everyday paper products into relics; each strip of paper reflects a specific moment in time and contains information relating to that moment. exchange, food, entertainment, and work; those things that seem so precious at one moment can be so insignificant later. All is really kitsch.” Rivers received her BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design in 1979 and her MFA from University of South Carolina in 1986. She has exhibited across the country and is currently represented by Mathews Gallery/Deloney Newkirk Galleries in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Joseph Gierek Fine Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Meyer Gallery in Park City Utah.
Artspace 111 is dedicated to its vital role in the city of Fort Worth, and to making contemporary art approachable to individuals of all ages. With its sculpture and distinctive architectural character, the gallery offers a striking setting to host corporate and private events, and is also available for tours and other social gatherings.
