Artspace111 announces Casual Luxury Complex, a show by Devon Nowlin. The exhibition will open Friday, May 15, 2015 and will run through June 20, 2015. Enjoy beer, wine and light hors d’oeuvres from 5 – 8:30pm. Artspace111 is free and open to the public.

For this exhibition of new works, Nowlin has created paintings, photographs and small sculptures that speak to the personal and market-driven desire to curate environments and personas that aspire for a lifestyle of “casual luxury”. The intersection between art and commerce is an important aspect of her work, where she is interested in drawing parallels between today’s art industry and the world of marketing, personal image, and cultural attainment. This parallel is something that fashion retailers and magazine advertisers have been so effective at inspiring among the public. Nowlin will be creating an environment suggestive of a comfortable residential space inside of a commercial art gallery that evokes the style and nature of popular lifestyle marketing retailers.

DEVON NOWLIN

Devon Nowlin is a Fort Worth artist who holds a BFA from the University of North Texas (2004) and an MFA from Texas Christian University (2011). Primarily known for her figurative paintings, Nowlin also explores relationships of figures, forms, and concepts through works in diverse media. Her imagery is informed by notions of gender, the gaze, and the inherent experimentation of an artist’s practice. Recent exhibition include co action in collaboration with Margaret Meehan at 500X in Dallas, Relationship Status at Craighead Green Gallery in Dallas, and Go Figure at Artspace 111. Nowlin has taught at TCU, The Modern, and the Rachofsky Warehouse and is currently the Gallery Manager for The Art Galleries at TCU. Nowlin is a co-founding member of the Fort Worth-based art collective HOMECOMING! Committee, whose exhibitions include Friskt kopplat, halfen brunnet (Quickly connected, half burned) for the 2013 Texas Biennial and Post Communique at the Dallas Museum of Art. Her large-scale mural Trailing the Trinity, commissioned by Fort Worth Public Art, can be viewed from the Trinity River Trails at the Clearfork Main Street Bridge.
