Artspace111 is pleased to announce the 4th Annual Artspace111 Regional Juried Exhibition, featuring 2D and 3D artwork selected by the Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Shirley Reece-Hughes. The exhibition is designed to showcase the excellence and diversity of work from artists based in Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkasnas, and Louisiana, in a variety of media. Over $2000 will be awarded to the best works in show, and the first prize will include the opportunity to exhibit at Artspace111 in a separate solo or group show in 2017 - 2018.
Juror Shirley Reece-Hughes
Curator of Paintings and Sculpture, Amon Carter Museum of American Art
Shirley Reece-Hughes is the Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art where she has worked since 2009. She is currently working on an essay for the Whitney Museum of American Art’s upcoming retrospective exhibition and catalogue on Grant Wood. Reece-Hughes is co-organizer and co-author for the upcoming exhibition, A New American Sculpture, 1914–1945: Lachaise, Laurent, Nadelman and Zorach—which is one of the first group exhibitions devoted to American modernist figurative sculpture in over twenty years. Reece-Hughes is also co-curator and contributing essayist to the catalogue and exhibition, Wild Spaces, Open Seasons: Hunting and Fishing in American Art, which will open at the Amon Carter in October. Since 2012, Reece-Hughes has curated a gallery devoted to Texas art from private collections that rotates on an annual basis, and has served as a board member on the National Advisory Committee for the Grant Wood Art Colony at the University of Iowa. In 2011, she curated two fiftieth-anniversary exhibitions at the Amon Carter, The Allure of Paper: Drawings and Watercolors from the Collection and Will Barnet: Relationships, Intimate and Abstract.
She received her PhD in art history from the University of Kansas where she was awarded a Henry Luce Foundation Grant for her dissertation David Bates: Southern Culture, Places and Memories Through the Eyes of an Expressionist. In 2007, Dr. Reece-Hughes was the recipient of the Davidson Family Fellowship at the Amon Carter for her work on immigrant artists and their collecting of American folk art.
