The Painter's Garden: A Solo Exhibition by Erika Huddleston
The paintings are painted for the first time not in a public park but in the private garden designed and planted by Erika at her house. All of the landscape is un-irrigated and the plants are surging with the "urban wilderness" design techniques that Erika paints and looks for in public garden spaces. Matrix planting, where different species live together, allows the shortwe plants to shade the roots of taller plants and those taller plants in turn shade the shorter plants. Turk's Cap, sunflower, beautyberry, rose, blue grama grass, switchgrass.
The paintings are drawn in pencil at 1:1 scale and painted all outdoors, sitting. Titled after a Lucian Freud painting, "The Painter's Room," the exhibition explores the gardens that we inhabit and the personal garden of Erika.
"The Painter's Garden" will be on view October 24, 2025 – January 3, 2026 at Artspace111.
