Journey of the Lost Lobo: works by Dennis Blagg
Artspace111 is proud to present the latest solo exhibition Journey of the Lost Lobo, featuring artist Dennis Blagg for FWADA Fall Gallery Night 2024
Journey of the Lost Lobo is a series of paintings created after the deaths of Blagg’s older brother Woodrow Blagg and his best friend Vernon Fisher in April of 2023. The backdrop of many of these paintings depict the mountain Alsate, known as Pulliams Peak, located in the Big Bend National Park. The peak depicts the profile of the brave Apache warrior, Alsate, laying in a death like repose. Big Bend becomes a stage for a play about death as the final act, lit by light of a full moon. The cast consists of crows, buzzards, horses and mules. The main character is the Lost Lobo. Like a ghost he casts no shadow. The Lobo represents those in the grip of death and the spirit of those we have lost, reflecting Blagg’s feelings about death. Both Woodrow and Vernon died of cancer and both were intimidating and inspirational figures in his life. Both deserved a better option than chemotherapy and this show is dedicated to their memory. Journey of the Lost Lobo is a meditation on the metaphors of the landscape on comfort, grief and absolution.
