My objective as a sculptor is to evolve new forms and to make objects that have as their primary quality the ability to attract and hold a viewer’s gaze. Formal qualities are important as they are often the prerequisites in establishing rules of engagement between the artist and the viewer. Questions of originality, texture, color, materiality and proportion all come into play in achieving a form that is able to bridge the gap between a viewer’s casual glance and a potentially ecstatic experience.
In “Personal Responsibilities: The Carry-Ons”, the individual has the responsibility to carry on his own life, shape his own attitudes and fulfill his own destiny.
In “Salvation Now”, a cryptic plea for salvation is printed on a handmade canvas bag. Its limp, impotent form seems to be indicative of a nostalgic call to arms that may no longer have an audience.
