Reciprocity
Reciprocity refers to mutual dependence, action, or influence, and photographically the term indicates the relationship between the intensity and duration of light. In my recent work, reciprocity exists regarding the interdependence of my photographic and painting practices. As an artist and educator, much of my time is spent inspecting paintings, paint, photographs, digital files, and film, and I find a particular beauty in the materials that lead to the end product such as paint on palettes, color negatives, and damaged student black and white film. I like to think of the paint on palettes and the processed film as the heroes of the finished artworks, rather than letting them get lost in the process. My work falls into three groups, all based on the same theme, but visually quite different: paintings inspired by photographic film negatives, photographic images of paint, and photographic images of film.
