As a child, art was my anchor. It became my identity and how I received recognition. My favorite place growing up was my grandparent’s cotton farm in West Texas. The brown/orange color of the sand was and, still is, a recurring image in much of my work.
My way of working is to explore mixed media. I use tree stain in a wet-on-wet watercolor technique. On a really hot day, I pour the tree stain, made from Chinese Tallow tree seeds, onto wet paper. I guide the tree stain into images on the wet paper. The heat of the day dries the paper quickly and sets the images with my guidance. I can also use oil paint and encaustic wax in this mixed media process. My imagery is personal in nature and is chosen for how it adapts to the materials I use. In my work, I use imagery that is important to me and to which I have an emotional connection. I use paper that was bequeathed to me by a dear friend when she passed away. I am determined to use her paper in a way relevant to my art.
