Heyyy stupid is a series of oil paintings rooted in the satirization and rejection of the high regard held for humans. It does this by highlighting emotions or actions of awkwardness, ugliness and humor. The zoomed in faces with their exaggerated perspectives from unaesthetic angles mimic “ugly selfies”, a form of self-deprecating humor that my generation lives by. Self deprecation or as I like to say memey self expression, is a niche of absurdist humor that I found especially interesting to portray. A lot of these poses are people essentially saying ‘look at me being stupid’, and rejecting customary notions that humans are highly dignified. The style of painting with the expressive lines and flat shapes are meant to show a face level study of the characters, preventing embellishment and unmasking a candid portrayal. Every part of the person, both unsightly and remarkable, are all equally harvested. The blunt style further rejects the polished portrayals that we normally tend towards.
