The commoditization of what we want drives the destruction of what we need. We feel within ourselves a cognitive dissonance derived from our conflicting desires for convenient access to our environment, of which we are a part, and the vital decline caused by our unsustainable use of it. Our desires are contradictory with regards to comfort and responsibility. This is the core of the conflict within the pieces and the intention in making the work. Looking at these pieces reminds people of their own memories of being in nature. It places their memories in contrast with the desires they have and the learned behaviors and inherited perspectives of exploitation of those landscapes. Making the slabs is a condensation and translation of the experience of being in those landscapes. The process of ritualizing observation is the method in which I consider the future of those environments, and my agency in that future.
