I have always been fascinated by the human impulse to create. And art is the most intriguing aspect of human creativity. I see it as a meta-language based in concept, symbolism and metaphor. It is inherently open-ended in its references and interpretations. Art, practiced through the discipline of craft, takes us to a place where we are expressive of the divine.
The creation of stained glass holds an interesting space on the creative spectrum. It is an alchemical medium. I believe it is simultaneously craft, architecture and fine art. It has a constructivist component that is architectural and craft-like. Yet its symbolic and historically narrative role brings it into a realm of artistic conversation. As a material, glass is beautiful and dynamic and technically challenging. I find it to be the perfect medium to explore our societal definitions of art and craft.
