When I paint a still life, the process squanders organic objects, tubes of paint, brushes, papers. Yet the finished artworks have an economical quality that belies that sense of waste.
With “Slices, I-IV” (oil paint on Yupo), I experienced that tension among squandered resources, productivity, and beauty. I was sharing food with three others while we sheltered at home. I took the last grapefruit and cut it up into slices. Part of it went uneaten because it grew mold while I painted. Mundane items we take for granted are becoming prized again during the pandemic. The slices represent, too, how we are sharing (or, not hoarding) food.
