I believe there are two realms of human experience: an internal, subjective experience and, in contrast, an objective, sensory experience in which we perceive a world outside of ourselves. I explore my fascination with this duality through the representation of the human form and through formless, tactile skin-like surface. In my work I see the human form as a vessel: an empty or inhabited space. As an observer I question “What’s Inside” this vessel. I use drawing media in conjunction with paint as an active process to quell my curiosity about the phenomenology of “being”. As a result, polarities coexist: expressive line and monotone surface represent an empty shell awaiting life; thick paint represents a heap of tangible skin, a representation of the perceptual realm of experience. I believe the sentience of the material in my work is equal to that of the sentience of a human.
