I am a figurative painter whose work often includes nonrepresentational elements. My paintings use the interaction between these to explore themes of displacement, the tensions between permanence and change, and between clarity and uncertainty. My work also reflects my involvement with urban life, the built environment and the subject of place, and it draws upon my previous experience as an architect and urban planner. Some places and situations affect me with a sense of mystery, or with a quality or meaning that goes beyond their mere appearance. It is this response that I find compelling and which I try to express in my work.
