Line is the thread that ties my sculptures and works on paper together.
It is this simple design element that defines my sculpting and drawing. The lines in my work can be seen in the frayed and moth-eaten edge of an all too worn out felt hat, in the memory of the song of cracks and crackles of an old dried stick threaded with the plump curves of a marshmallow roasting on an open fire. They reverberate with the desperate and chaotic thrashes of a pet chicken's wings as it is rescued from floodwaters. Line radiates in the wet expression of the girl's face as she successfully struggles to keep her grip on the frantic fowls fluttering. I am inspired by the line and the gulf between a line that is alive and organic and a line that is mechanical and tense, a line with a gentle ending that makes you feel at ease or joyous and a line that stops abruptly and takes your breath away. Capturing the energy of the line is constant in my sculptures and drawings. Lines are my language.
