I use oil paints to capture local landscapes, the people who inhabit them and scenes from my travels. My background in photojournalism taught me to observe people, their interactions and relationships to particular settings. I use those observations to create a more idealized and stylized depiction of what I think would make a good image. I use my own photos as references for paintings but I don't seek to copy digital images; rather, I use them as inspiration and often combine multiple photos to make a single painting. My work avoids photorealism in favor of a softer and freer approach to capturing scenes with paint. I hope my paintings hint at larger stories behind the figures and places they depict, and that they play on human themes like community, isolation, regret.
