My work aims at “represent[ing] the non-representational,” attempting to convey a very personal, experience of and relationship with nature by immersing the viewer in striking visual representations of elements of our natural world. Whether in a large-format botanical, or an abstracted representation of the sea and sky, a personal connection with nature is the vein that ties all of my artwork together.
I am primarily a watercolor painter; as such, I lean into the fundamentally dynamic, serendipitous nature of water. Its unpredictability, blooming effects, and translucence embody and mirror nature’s ever-changing character, especially that of clouds, oceans, and the abstracted textures of the rain, forests, and plants. Even within the bounds of a realistically rendered subject, my paintings incorporate the free, abstract elements of water and pigment flowing together. I sometimes paint with rain and saltwater. My intention is to bring the outside in.
