In my work, I explore deeply personal themes of home and cultural identity and reference feelings of nostalgia as well as ever-evolving expectations. As someone who left her country of birth, Venezuela, to build a new life in Texas, and once again in Angola, Africa, I am continuously exploring what it means to embrace a new cultural identity, while also protecting the one I have brought with me.
Topographies of a place to know, arose out my experience living as an expat in Soyo, a small town located on the Congo River. Since I moved there, I had been looking for area maps in an effort to understand my surroundings, and my location in context. I only found some maps by Google search, however not actual printed city maps. Then,I decided to created my own maps. These works relate to the isolation I experienced while in the process of create a new home and assimilate a new culture. Today, I am back home in Houston experiencing another kind of isolation while assimilating a new normal.
