"Winter Schizophrenics" Series:
The idea for this series comes from the statistic that more schizophrenics are diagnosed during winter than any other time of year; and that schizophrenia is characterized by thoughts or experiences, which are out of touch with reality - the disorganized, the unable to be grasped or fully understood.
A canvas is given texture and then painted solid black. I break open a spray paint can with a claw-tooth hammer to get a burst of color and movement. If necessary, the spray paint is manipulated before drying. Then a clean geometric design is applied with acrylic as the last layer. The final image is to be a clean, measured, and complicated design over a tumultuous and disorderly movement of color.
The interplay between the burst of color, which is unable to be fully controlled as the can explodes, and the clean geometric shapes atop the color, creates the appealing visual conversation and tension in these works.
