My work is guided by material exploration. I begin each piece with an idea I want to explore, not knowing what the outcome will be. I then start to build on the topic using word associated materials and open myself to the best compositional dialogue. I seek to create an alternative or abstract representation of important topics like mental health and our responses to the present-day environment; political, immigration, pandemics etc. For example, in the work Blinds the central concept of man-made environmental issues led me to the associative materials of abandonment and ash. As I start making this piece, I build on ideas of choosing to see and windows that others cannot escape from.
I resist categorization as an artist and approach making without restricting myself to materials. Through exploration of new processes and materials I am able to create an open dialogue with the viewer. In turn, the audience is given the freedom to be visually vocal.
